The United Way of Northern BC is thrilled to announce the results of the Tree of Lights! This campaign, a re-invigoration of a well-known Prince George holiday celebration, entailed the lighting of a 60-foot tree atop the Coast Prince George Hotel by APA as donations came in toward the initiative. This year, the goal was $25,000 to put toward mental health supports in the Prince George area. United Way is pleased to say that the community of Prince George came together donating an amazing $20,375!
“We are so grateful to the people and organizations that provided gifts in a range of amounts. From the change out of their pockets to $5 for lighting a bulb in the name of someone, to an anonymous $5,000 donation, we are taken aback by the true sense of community this tree has brought and the generosity of the people around us.” Says Trista Spencer, Interim Executive Director, United Way of Northern BC. “The significance of this amount of funding can’t be understated. It will help more than we know and may well be the difference in many people’s lives between surviving and thriving. Again, we can’t express enough how thankful we are for the community that surrounds us and how truly supportive everyone has been.”
But it’s not over yet! The team at United Way of Northern BC has decided to leave the campaign open into the New Year. The Coast Prince George Hotel by APA has generously opened a campaign to continue to support the Tree of Lights. For any new bookings they make until December 31, 2019, the hotel will make a $5 donation to the Tree of Lights. “The Coast has done so much for us already, we are so appreciative of their extra efforts to help us get to that $25,000 goal,” Trista says. “We have seen some other donations coming in as well so would like to leave the opportunity open for anyone who may not have had the chance to give their gift but would like to. Perhaps we will still get to the $25,000 goal yet!”.
If you’d like to help United Way get from $20,375 to the $25,000 goal, you have until January 12, 2020, to get your donations in. Please donate at the United Way of Northern BC office on the 5th floor of the Prince George Native Friendship Centre, at the Front Desk at The Coast Prince George Hotel by APA, or online at www.unitedwaynbc.ca/uwtreeoflights/.
A final announcement will be made to let the community of Prince George know if they made it!
