The first round of allocations of the Emergency Community Support Fund (ECSF) completed

The first round of allocations from UWNBC’s portion of Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund (ECSF) has now been completed. Over $508,000 has been granted to 23 non-profit agencies (30 programs) to cope with the effects of COVID-19 pandemic and provide the much-needed support to those in need across Northern BC. The major portion of the funding has been allocated to programs and initiatives providing food security and mental health support to the most vulnerable population.

The need for support has grown immensely in Northern BC. The non-profit agencies are struggling to keep their doors open and provide essential services because of the economic downturn that has occurred due to the pandemic. The funding under the Government of Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund has enabled UWNBC to fund these agencies to ensure the critical support continues and the most affected segment of the population in Northern BC is best served during these challenging times.

“Charities and non-profit organizations are trying to help as many Canadians as they can despite fewer donations and fewer volunteers. The Government of Canada is pleased to support these invaluable organizations through the Emergency Community Support Fund so they can continue to serve those most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.”-The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development

“It truly is a privilege to be able to support so many agencies across Northern BC through Canada’s ECSF. The impact of this funding goes far beyond the dollars being provided as it helps connect the communities across the region with incredibly valuable supports.” Says Trista Spencer, Executive Director UWNBC.

”Thank you to the Government of Canada for providing this much needed support, thank you to the volunteers and staff that continue to work hard to administer the fund, and thank you to the agencies that directly help so many find the resources they need while they navigate this difficult time.”

UWNBC will continue to accept applications for the remaining ECSF funds for Northern BC until June 29, 2020. Charity/non-profit organizations that have not yet applied for the funding and are providing frontline social services are welcome to submit their applications for programs/services that have been enhanced or created as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Emergency Community Support Fund is funded by the Government of Canada.
