Various pandemic friendly events added to the United Way Tree of Lights campaign to make Christmas more joyful this season

The United Way of Northern BC (UWNBC) is very excited to announce that three new events have been added before the final light-up of the tree to bring joy and happiness to everyone in a new pandemic friendly format.

The tree that symbolizes light and hope is now standing tall and the initial light up to kick-off this year’s campaign will take place this Saturday, December 5th, 2020. But that is not all. This year United Way recognizes the shadows the pandemic has caused in the lives of people in our community and is finding ways to bring joy and happiness to everyone in a pandemic friendly format. We have added three new events to the campaign that will take place on December 5th, 12th, and 19th before the final light up on December 22nd.

The details of this event are outlined below:

Early Bird Kick-off – December 5th, 2020

(Prince Geroge and Fort St. John)

With the help of local businesses, United Way will be giving away thousands of dollars worth of prizes to people that will make donations to light the bulbs/strings on the tree. People who will make their donation before December 5th, 2020 will have their names entered into a draw to win thousands of dollars worth of prizes. The live stream will start at 4 pm on the United Way Tree of Lights Facebook page where the tree will light up after the campaign is introduced. Then the Early Bird draws will take place before the tree gets turned off again around 4:30 pm.

2020 Virtual Christmas Party – December 12th, 2020

(Prince Geroge and Fort St. John)

As part of the “new normal” with every one of us staying at our homes for most of the time, it is imperative that we find new ways to bring joy and happiness to our lives this Christmas. United Way of Northern BC has moved A Christmas “party” to an online platform! The purpose of this event is to bring the community together to provide the party that so many are missing. This will be a free event that will be held virtually with no requirement of registrations. This event will encompass different holiday-themed performances/ activities, etc. for people to tune into details of which will be available on the United Way Tree of Lights Facebook page by the end of this week.

“We are so excited to bring a little holiday magic to the community through these events! With this year being so unusual and isolating, we wanted to find some opportunities to bring the joy of the season through some amazing give aways and some heartfelt entertainment.” Says Trista Spencer, Executive Director, UWNBC. ”We ask for your support through early donations so you can get in on the draws and help us kick off the campaign with gusto! And, we truly hope you will join us for our virtual Christmas party the following Saturday – have it on while you’re wrapping Christmas presents, playing games with your family, or sit and watch with a cup of cocoa and cozy blanket. It’s a great way to come together – apart.”

The fundraising goal for this year is $30,000 with proceeds going towards raising awareness and support of programs and services to fight the #unignorable issue of ‘drug abuse and overdose’ in Prince George and the other issues that surround it, like mental wellness and basic needs.
