Orange Day 2018

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

September 24, 2018

United Way of Northern BC – Indigenous Early Years Table (Success x 6) and Prince George Early Years will honour Orange Shirt Day on September 27, 2018 in Prince George.  (Original day is September 30th)

Orange Shirt Day: Every Child Matters is a grassroots event that acknowledges the harm that Canada’s residential school system had on generations of Indigenous families and their communities. The original day was September 30, but this year, Orange Shirt Day 2018 will be on September 27, 2018.  Canadians are asked to wear orange as as sign of support.

Orange Shirt Day: Every Child Matters  is a day to Listen, Learn and Celebrate Aboriginal Culture.  Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.    WEAR AN ORANGE SHIRT !!

The Indigenous Early Years Table (Success by 6) has purchased 60 books titled “Stolen Words” by Melanie Florence (Illustrated by Gabrielle Grimard). These books will be read in different locations within the City of Prince George. Mayor Lynn Hall will be reading to children from the Strong Start, Kindergarten and daycare programs at Nusdeh Yoh Elementary School on morning of September 27th.

History:

Orange Shirt day is Celebrated on September 30, 2018 and originated in Williams Lake.  The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anit-racism and anit-bullying policies for the coming school year.  It also gives teachers time to plan events that will include children, as we want to ensure that we are passing the story and learning on to the next generations.
